Making sure you own your social media pages and digital ad platforms.
Got a quick marketing tip for you today. This won’t apply to everyone. But if you are guilty of this – I hope to set you straight. What we’re talking about today is the danger of NOT owning your digital & social media pages.

If you haven’t given much thought about who owns your digital & social media accounts, I think it’s time for you to wake up before a potential nightmare begins.
I think we’re all familiar with the drill – the company owner reads some story about some new marketing opportunity and wants to get on whatever that newest platform is. Enter the 20 something year old who knows their way around and they get the task of setting it up. Everything is running just fine until that person leaves OR… maybe the owner & staff person no longer see eye to eye and staff is shown the door.
This happens all the time. And Chances are pretty good that when it happens, you – the owner – no longer have control of your page. According to the digital & social media companies, he who set it up is the owner. And get this – according to some recent court rulings, the owner is the person whose name appears as the administrator on the account. And if that’s not you – Things can get pretty scary. Pretty fast.
My tip for today – make sure that you – the owner – own and control all of your digital & social media assets. Do you know whose name (or names) are listed as the administrator on your company’s digital and social media accounts? Your digital & social networks should be viewed as company assets. And you should have a plan in place BEFORE someone goes rogue and hijacks your accounts. I’d even go so far as saying you should develop a digital & social media ownership policy, and having everyone on your team sign off on it.
From your Google Business Profile page, ad accounts, to your YouTube or Linked In account, to every social media user name and even the Social Media Content your team puts out. Make sure you own it all. And make sure you retain Access to every one of your Social Media Accounts. And just in case you are planning on letting someone on your team pursue other interests, you might want to stay late or show up early so you can change all those passwords or access levels before you share the news that they’ve been liberated. We’ve all read the stories of the person who was sacked and then took to that companies social media accounts to air their grievances to everyone. Don’t let that be you..
